Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Product Description
Panasonic's high-definition PT-44LCX65 is a liquid-crystal projection television with a broad, 44-inch screen. Its native pixel resolution is a detailed 1,280 x 720, and it comes with a built-in ATSC (DTV) tuner so you'll be set to receive free HD broadcasts right out of the box. More pixels translate into less stair-stepping artifacts, so curved and diagonal image edges look smooth and natural.

The set offers a total of 12 separate inputs, including 3 component-video inputs, an HDMI digital video input for a direct-digital connection with a DTV set-top box, and a front-panel PC input capable of VGA, SVGA, or compressed XGA resolution. A handy flash-memory slot is perfect for viewing digital slide shows of your favorite photos right off your digital camera (accepts 8 MB to 1 GB SD Cards).

A built-in CableCARD slot lets you receive standard-definition and high-definition digital broadcasts via a small card--no bulky set-top cable box required. (Contact your cable company to find out if they offer this service.)

The PT-44LCX65 is considerably less bulky than most rear-projection televisions and consumes less energy. Further, LCD displays don't suffer from misconvergence or flicker, like their CRT counterparts. The Panasonic multimedia display incorporates thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, also known as active matrix, to improve color reproduction, eliminate ghosting, and boost response speed.

The model's motion-adaptive 3D Y/C comb filter enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

Many TVs force you to cycle through every video input in sequence when you want to change inputs. This can result in pushing the "video" button 5 or 6 times before you reach your desired source. The PT-44LCX65 lets you select video inputs directly so you can jump right to the input you need.

The set's 100-watt HID (High Intensity Discharge) lamp is easily replaceable, extending the life of the set well beyond the life of a single lamp. The TV's 2-way stereo speakers are powered by 15 watts per channel, and BBE ViVA HD3D Sound makes sure every program sounds its fullest and liveliest.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver). HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

Customer Reviews

9 months of happy ownership and going strong5
I did a lot of research on this TV before I bought it, and I'm glad I looked around. For the most part, reviews have been very good on this TV, and the complaints I do see are usually about the black levels (how dark is the screen when it's supposed to be pitch black) and indications that a plasma TV would have a better picture.

My experience with the TV brings me to shoot both of those criticisms down in flames. I notice no "blue" or "dark blue" or whatever it is people ar complaining about regarding the screen when it is showing me "black". Also, I wouldn't dare buy a plasma TV no matter what the price, since I like many people play videogames and watch sports on TV and with a plasma, you're going to get permanent "burn in" of images that are on screen for a lengthy duration (such as videogame life bars or sports scores).

My wife and I love this TV to pieces, and thus far we've had no troubles at all with it. Though we do have a good surround stereo, we're incredibly impressed with the simulated surround that the TV provides. It has a very nice anti-glare screen that really makes a big difference day in and day out. It has a lot of HD inputs, such that I run Xbox, Playstation 2 and GameCube all easily through it and they all look great. It has a feature that allows me to split the screen, so my wife can watch TV on one half of the screen while I play Halo on the other side.

I bought my TV from Best Buy in person. I wouldn't say the experience was all bad, but I would recommend buying one from Amazon.com or another online source. I did get the "salesman" treatment when I got the TV, and wound up buying and returning over $250 worth of pointless cables and cords that I really didn't need. I bought and extended warranty on the set just in case the LCD projection lamp starts to go out, but thus far ours has gone strong the whole time and hasn't needed to be replaced. All this and we probably use the set 4-6 hours per day.

All in all, a great TV, stylish, affordable and no worries about Plasma TV burn-in.

Love it, love it, love it5
We purchased our unit at Circuit City for $1,299 plus $50 delivery. Easy to install, looks pretty, and great picture/sound quality especially with the HDTV Comcast channels. We were watching a football game on HDTV, and we could clearly see the dirt on the thumbnail of the center. It is user friendly. The univeral remote is easy to operate, no sweat integrating a newly purchased Panasonic DVD player. Overall, very pleased and would highly recommend.

Great TV for the price. Works well.4
We have this TV for almost a month now. It is working great. It doesnt display great picture for non-hdtv channels -- but it kinda varies with what channel/program is being watched. I assume this will be the case with any such hdtv.

The remote was easy to use and setup. The TV is very light and that is pretty cool.
I tried the SD card slot and it works OK. The slideshow is slow though -- it takes a couple of seconds to display each photo -- which is a pain -- but I assume this is not really the main use of the TV.

Overall I think this is the best 42 inch TV you can get for 1300.
